Name is from "zazen", Japanese Buddhist meditation, as the flower recalls a bowed monk meditating. Hard to find. Good garden plant. Mid-spring. Rhymes with "ma can sew".

This is a rare form of our most popular arisaema, and a star of the spring garden, this widespread Japanese/Chinese species is unsurpassed for "wow" impact. The startling white "golfball" spadix is displayed inside the purple spathe. In addition to the showy flowers, this form has green leaves splashed with silver for all summer foliage interest. Early to mid-season. Needs excellent drainage in rich woodsy soil in shade.
