ORCHIDS (CITES CERTIFIED)

Some terrestrial orchids are extremely difficult in the garden, but the ones we offer are not. They are nursery propagated and grown, not wild collected, and are vigorous and blooming size. Terrestrial orchids do well in well-drained, humus-rich soil in shade. They can also be grown in pots if kept cool in the winter. Very well-drained soil and good air circulation are essential.

Most of Amitostigma species has tiny flowers, but this Amitostigma keisukei has relatively larger, showy flowers, even the size of plant is only 2-3 inches tall. They are native at humid rocky places in shade, so they grow well at rock gardens or in pots.

Bletilla striata 'Junpaku' Zones 6-9 #802-029
Bletilla striata is one of the most beautiful hardy terrestrial orchids, normally with a purple flower. This new Japanese selection has a true albino flower, with no trace of any other color. This is much more beautiful than the white-flowered form commonly sold in the US. Grow in a very well-drained soil mix in light shade or with morning sun.

This is one of the easiest orchids for the woodland garden, growing well in any humus-rich well drained soil. The typical Bletilla striata has purple flowers, but this new introduction has flowers with a strong blue cast. Because of the flower mutation, we could not propagate from seeds, we propagate by division for many years, you can imagine how long does it take even the Bletilla is easy to grow and multiply very quickly. Dark reddish purple color and white inside the lips, makes good contrast. Vigorous and easy toof grow same as the species. Limited supply for fall 2006.

Valuable evergreen perennial for shade requiring well-drained, humusy soil. All have beautiful flowers and some are deliciously fragrant.

A rare and fairly hardy terrestrial orchid from the mountains of Kyushu island in Japan. It is a terrestrial orchid with handsome evergreen leaves and spikes of large pink flowers to about 15" tall. This is one of the rarest and most beautiful Calanthe species, rarely seen in cultivation. Grow in well-drained, humus-rich soil in light to medium shade.

Japanese species a with broad ruff of pleated foliage like an Elizabethan collar, and a very showy lovely pink lady's slipper flower. Not for the beginner, but fairly easy in mid to heavy shade, with moist, humisty, very well-drained acidic soil. Takes a year or two settle in well. Easier in cool-summer areas.

 

DENDROBIUM MONILIFORME
The variegated selections of Dendrobium moniliforme have been grown in Japan for hundreds of years but are rarely seen in the West. They are horticultural selections of an epiphytic orchid common in warm-temperate East Asia, found in the wild growing on branches and trunks of frees, and on rock outcroppings. Dendrobiums are dormant in winter, when they lose some of their leaves, and if kept dry, will take frequent freezing temperatures. Dendrobiums are easy plants for the cold greenhouse or the windowsill of a cool room. In Zones 7 to 9 they can be kept outdoors all year, under cover in winter to protect from rain. If kept cold and dry in winter, they will produce their wonderful fragrant flowers in early summer. They can be grown wired to bark or branches (Sassafras is best) or in small clay pots with roots wrapped with sphagnum moss. Bright light but not full sun is best. Water routinely and fertilize in summer; keep cold and dry in winter.

Liparis is another genus of orchids rarely seen in cultivation in the West, although it is very popular in Japan. The plants overall are charming and the flowers are interesting at close range.

Neofinetia is an evergreen epiphytic native Japanese orchid from s. Japan and the Ryukyus. It has beautiful white flowers in summer. Japanese hobbyists collect many different forms with variegated foliage. Neofinetia is not difficult to grow. It is best in sphagnum in clay pots or wired to bark. It likes cool temperatures in winter (down to freezing). Let dry between waterings and fertilize in summer.
