Some terrestrial orchids are extremely difficult
in the garden, but the ones we offer are not. They are nursery propagated
and grown, not wild collected, and are vigorous and blooming size. Terrestrial
orchids do well in well-drained, humus-rich soil in shade. They can also
be grown in pots if kept cool in the winter. Very well-drained soil and
good air circulation are essential.

DENDROBIUM
MONILIFORME
The variegated selections of Dendrobium moniliforme have
been grown in Japan for hundreds of years but are rarely seen in the West.
They are horticultural selections of an epiphytic orchid common in warm-temperate
East Asia, found in the wild growing on branches and trunks of frees, and
on rock outcroppings. Dendrobiums are dormant in winter, when they lose
some of their leaves, and if kept dry, will take frequent freezing temperatures.
Dendrobiums are easy plants for the cold greenhouse or the windowsill of
a cool room. In Zones 7 to 9 they can be kept outdoors all year, under cover
in winter to protect from rain. If kept cold and dry in winter, they will
produce their wonderful fragrant flowers in early summer. They can be grown
wired to bark or branches (Sassafras is best) or in small clay pots with
roots wrapped with sphagnum moss. Bright light but not full sun is best.
Water routinely and fertilize in summer; keep cold and dry in winter.

GOODYERA
SPECIES FROM JAPAN
Goodyeras are evergreen orchids widespread in Asia, with
many species, known to gardeners as relatives of the rattlesnake plantain
(Goodyera pubescens). They don't have showy flowers, but the foliage is
very beautiful, with various patterns and a luminescent sheen. Good in woodland
in medium to heavy shade, or in pots planted in orchid bark for the cold
greenhouse. Require perfect drainage.
